Business and Career Masterclass for Young Graduates


Business and Career Masterclass (BCM), was designed to provide practical guidance and top-notch professional insights, into the pool of opportunities available for young graduates. Leaving school can be really exciting, as it brings a sense of fulfillment and achievement. However, this excitement can be short-lived, in a country where the unemployment rate is high, and the ease of doing business is very poor.

Securing a Job

Almost half of university’s graduates are unemployed in Nigeria, It is very difficult for young graduates to secure employment, unless you know somebody. For the “unconnected” ones, the chances of securing a gainful employment are very slim. Also, the work experience, some employers request for are just unbelievable. At times, they request for 5-10 years of experience. How do they expect young graduates to meet this criteria? Some have even died in the process of seeking for a job. The starry-eyes hunt for a job, isn’t just murky. Sometimes, it is outrageously dangerous.

Starting a Business

For graduates, who ignore the option of hunting for a white-collar job, to set up a business, are also not left out of the challenges in Nigeria. According to financial experts, 80% of Small and Medium Enterprise (SMEs) in Nigeria, fail within the first five years of existence. This can be attributed to a lot of factors, including, lack of experience, poor access to finance, wrong business practices, amongst others. Many Nigerians venture into business, not because they have real interests in it, but because they have no other means of survival. As a result, they are not well equipped with the skillset to run a successful business.

Pursuing a Master’s Degree

Some graduates, strikes-out the option of getting a job or starting a business, to further their education, as a way of boosting their chances of getting a good job. Most graduates will immediately, prefer to advance their studies outside the shores of Nigeria. However, this hope is easily dashed, if applications are not successful or there is no financial support/scholarship grants to support their aspirations. The benefits of completing a master’s degree abroad are limitless. Aside adding an international experience to your CV, you get to experience a brand new country with incredible outlooks, customs and activities. For many students, it’s their first opportunity of travelling abroad. They get to learn a new language, develop a new interest/hidden passion and build lasting relationship across cultures.
